What Does the Bible Teach About Truth & God's Word?

In a world characterized by philosophical relativism, moral confusion, and subjective opinions, Holy Scripture proclaims the absolute, objective reality of divine truth. In biblical theology, truth (emet in Hebrew, aletheia in Greek) is not an abstract concept or human consensus; it is rooted in the very character of the living God, who is the God of truth (Psalm 31:5) and in whom there is no lie, deceit, or shadow of turning (Titus 1:2).

auto_storiesKey Biblical Truths:

  • John 14:6:Jesus reveals His exclusive identity: He is not merely a teacher of truth, but the living Truth incarnate, the only path to the Father.
  • John 8:31-32:True discipleship is defined by abiding in Christ's Word, resulting in knowing the truth that brings supernatural freedom from the power of sin.
  • John 17:17:Christ prays for the sanctification of His church, anchoring their spiritual purity in the infallible reality: Your word is truth.

Biblical & Covenantal Foundations

In a world characterized by philosophical relativism, moral confusion, and subjective opinions, Holy Scripture proclaims the absolute, objective reality of divine truth. In biblical theology, truth (emet in Hebrew, aletheia in Greek) is not an abstract concept or human consensus; it is rooted in the very character of the living God, who is the God of truth (Psalm 31:5) and in whom there is no lie, deceit, or shadow of turning (Titus 1:2).

God's written Word is the supreme standard of truth for humanity. In His High Priestly prayer, Jesus prayed for His disciples: Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth (John 17:17). Scripture is God-breathed (theopneustos), completely reliable, and profitable for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). The Word of God acts as a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, illuminating the moral darkness of the fallen world and exposing the deceitful desires of the human heart.

Ultimately, truth is personal and incarnate in the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus made the exclusive, unyielding claim: I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me (John 14:6). To know Christ is to know the ultimate reality of God, humanity, sin, and salvation. Jesus promised His followers: If you abide in My word, you are truly My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:31-32). Truth liberates the soul from the tyranny of falsehood and anchors us in eternal life.
