Bible Verses About Justice & Righteousness

Biblical justice (mishpat) and righteousness (tsedeq) are inseparable attributes of the living God, rooted in His immutable character and holy sovereignty. The Psalmist exclaims: Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before You (Psalm 89:14). Unlike secular or relativistic theories of justice, biblical justice is defined not by shifting cultural conventions, but by the holy nature and revealed moral law of the Creator.

Throughout the Old Testament, Yahweh identifies Himself as the champion of the weak, the orphan, the widow, and the resident foreigner: the quartet of the vulnerable. In the Mosaic covenant, divine law demanded fair weights, honest courts, and the protection of the poor from exploitation. The Old Testament prophets thunder against religious hypocrisy that ignores social oppression, with the prophet Micah famously declaring: He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8).

In the New Testament, divine justice and divine mercy meet in glorious harmony at the cross of Jesus Christ. God did not overlook human sin; rather, in His holy justice, He placed the penalty upon His Son, so that He might be both just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus (Romans 3:26). Having received this unmerited grace, disciples of Jesus are called to live justly in the world, speaking up for the voiceless, showing impartiality, and acting as agents of Christ's righteousness until He returns to judge the earth in equity.
