In the Old Testament, the practice of tithing (giving a tenth) preceded the Mosaic Law, seen when Abraham gave a tenth of all the spoils to Melchizedek, priest of God Most High (Genesis 14:20).
Under the Mosaic covenant, tithing supported the Levitical priesthood, funded the national feasts of worship, and provided social welfare for the resident foreigner, the orphan, and the widow. In Malachi 3:10, God challenged a backslidden nation that was withholding its tithes: Bring the full tithe into the storehouse... and thereby put Me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.
In the New Covenant, generosity is elevated from a legal minimum to a joyful, grace-motivated reflection of the cross. The Apostle Paul writes: Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). The ultimate motivation for Christian generosity is the Gospel itself: For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you by His poverty might become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9). Giving generously frees the heart from the idolatry of mammon and lays up eternal treasure in heaven.
