What Does Proverbs 3:9 Mean?

The son is commanded to honor the LORD with his wealth and with the firstfruits of his produce. This requirement brings the fear of God into the material realm involving money and labor. Proverbs does not separate spiritual life from economic life as the use of resources is a primary test of trust. Offering the first portion specifically requires the person to prioritize God's claim before their own needs are fully met. It is the practical expression of trusting God as the source of all provision rather than relying on one's own accumulation.

The firstfruits principle is established in the covenant law as seen in [Exodus 23:19]. It requires giving the first of the harvest before the rest of the crop is even gathered. This act declares that the farmer trusts the giver of the harvest to continue providing until the work is complete. It is a physical enactment of the trust mentioned in verse 5. By giving what comes first, the person acknowledges that everything they have worked for ultimately belongs to the LORD and is held by his grace.

Paul identifies Christ as the firstfruits in [1 Corinthians 15:20] regarding the resurrection from the dead. The principle established in the agricultural laws of Israel reaches its highest meaning in the new creation. God offers his own Son as the first part of a new humanity with the rest of his people to follow. The wisdom that honors God with resources in Proverbs is the same wisdom that recognizes God's ultimate gift in Christ. Both involve the recognition of God as the prior owner and giver of life.
