1THE second booke of the prophet Esdras the sonne of Saraias, the sonne of Azarias, the sonne of Helcias, the sonne of Salamas, the sonne of Sadoc, the sonne of Achitob,stylus2the sonne of Achias, the sonne of Phinees, the sonne of Heli, the sonne of Amerias, the sonne of Aziei, the sonne of Marimoth, the sonne of Arna, the sonne of Ozias, the sonne of Borith, the sonne of Abissei, the sonne of Phinees, the sonne of Eleazar,stylus3the sonne of Aaron, of the tribe of Leui: which was captiue in the countrie of the Medes, in the reigne of Artaxerxes king of the Persians.stylus4And the word of our Lord came to me, saying:stylus5Goe, and telle my people their wicked deedes, and to their children the iniquitie which they haue done against me, that they may tel their childrens children:stylus6because the sinnes of their fathers are increased in them: for forgetting me they haue sacrificed to strange goddes.stylus7Why, did not I bring them out of the land of AEgypt, out of the house of bondage? but they haue prouoked me to wrath and despised my counsels.stylus8But thou shake of the heare of thy head, and throw al euils vpon them: for they haue not obeyed my law, a rebellious people.stylus9How long shal I forbeare them, to whom I haue done so great benefites?stylus10Many kinges haue I ouerthrowen for their sakes, Pharao with his seruantes, and al his hoste haue I streken downe.stylus11Al the nations haue I destroyed before their face, and in the east I haue scatered the people of two prouinces, Tyre and Sidon, and haue slayne al their aduersaries.stylus12But speake thou to them, saying: Thus sayth our Lord:stylus13In dede I made you passse through the sea, and gaue you fensed streetes from the beginning: I gaue you Moyses a prince, and Aaron a priest,stylus14I gaue you light in a pillar of fire, and did great wonders among you: but you haue forgotten me, sayth our Lord.stylus15Thus sayth the Lord omnipotent: The quailes were for a signe to you, I gaue you tentes for safegard, and there you murmured:stylus16and you triumphed not in my name for the destruction of your enimies, but euen to this day you yet murmure.stylus17Where are the benefites, which I haue done to you? Why, when you were hungrie and thirstie in the desert, did you not crye to me.stylus18saying: Why hast thou brought vs into this desert to kil vs? it were better for vs to serue the AEgyptians, then to dye in this desert.stylus19I badde griefe for your mourninges, and gaue you manna for meate: you did eate the bread of Angels.stylus20When you were thirstie, did not I cleaue the rocke, and waters flowed to your ful? for heate I couered you with the leaues of trees.stylus21I diuided to you fatte landes: the Chananeites, and the Pherezeites, and the Philisthiims I cast out from your face: what shal I yet doe to you? sayth our Lord.stylus22Thus sayth the Lord omnipotent: When you were in the desert, in the riuer of the Amorreite thirstie, and blaspheming my name,stylus23I gaue you not fire for blasphemies, but cast wood into the water, and made the water sweete.stylus24What shal I doe to thee Iacob? thou wouldest not obey me Iuda. I wil turne me to other nations, and wil geue them my name, that they may kepe my statutes.stylus25Because you haue forsaken me, I also wil forsake you: when you shal require me to be merciful, I wil not haue mercie.stylus26When you shal cal vpon me, I wil not heare you. For you haue contaminated your handes in bloud, and your feete are swift to commit murders.stylus27You haue not as it were forsaken me, but your selues, sayth our Lord.stylus28Thus sayth the Lord omnipotent: Haue not I prayed you, as a father his sonnes, and as a mother her daughters, and as a nource her litle ones,stylus29that you should be my people, and I should be your God: & you my children, and I your father?stylus30So I gathered you, as an henne her chickens vnder her winges: but now what shal I doe to you? I wil cast you out from my face.stylus31The oblation when you shal offer to me, I wil turne away my face from you: for I haue reiected your festiual dayes, and newmoones, and circumcisions.stylus32I sent to you my seruantes the prophetes, whom you apprehending slew, and tore their bodies: whose bloud I wil require, sayth our Lord.stylus33Thus sayth the Lord omnipotent: Your house is desolate, I wil cast you out as the winde doth stubble,stylus34and your children shal not haue propagation: because they haue neglected my commandment, and haue done that which is euil before me.stylus35I wil deliuer your houses to a people coming, who not hearing me, yet beleued me: to whom I haue not shewed signes, they wil doe the thinges that I haue commanded.stylus36Thei haue not seene the prophetes, and they wil be mindful of their iniquities.stylus37I cal to witnesse the grace of the people coming, whose litle ones reioyce with gladnes: me not seeing with eyes of flesh, but in spirit beleuing the thinges that I haue sayd, they obey.stylus38And now brother behold what glorie: and see the people coming from the east:stylus39to whom I wil geue the conduct of Abraham, Isaac, and Iacob, and Osee, and Amos, and Micheas, and Ioel, and Abdias, and Ionas,stylus40and Nahum, and Habacuc, Sophonias, Aggeus, Zacharias, and Malachias, who is called also the Angel of our Lord.stylus
