4 ESDRAS

4 Esdras 2

1THVS sayth our Lord: I brought this people out of bondage, whom I gaue commandments by my seruantes the, prophetes whom they would not heare, but made my counsels voide.
2The mother that bare them, sayth to them: Goe ye children, because I am a widow and forsaken.
3I brought you vp with gladnes, and I haue lost you with mourning and sorow, because you haue sinned before the Lord God, and haue done euil before him.
4But now what shal I doe to you? I am a widow and forsaken: goe ye children, & aske mercie of our Lord.
5And I cal thee father a witnesse vpon the mother of the children, because they would not kepe my testament,
6that thou bring them to confusion, and their mother to spoile, that there be no propagation of them.
7Let them be scatered into the nations, let their name be put out of the earth: because they haue despised my sacrament.
8Woe be to thee Assur, which hydest the iniquious with thee: o wicked nation remember what I did to Sodom and Gomorrhe:
9whose land lieth in cloddes of pitch and heapes of ashes: so wil I doe to them, that haue not heard me, sayth the Lord omnipotent.
10Thus sayth our Lord to Esdras: Tel my people, that I wil geue them the kingdom of Ierusalem, which I had to geue to Israel.
11And I wil take their glorie to me, and wil geue them the eternal tabernacles, which I had prepared for them.
12The tree of life shal be to them for an ointment of odor, and they shal not labour, nor faynt.
13Goe ye and you shal receiue: pray for few dayes to you, that they may be shortened: the kingdom is now prepared for you, watch ye.
14Testifie heauen and earth, for I haue broken the euil, and created the good: because I liue, sayth our Lord.
15Mother embrace thy children: bring them vp with gladnes, as a doue confirmeth their feete: because I haue chosen thee, sayth our Lord.
16And I wil raise vp the dead out of their places, and wil bring them out of the monuments: for I haue knowen my name in Israel.
17Feare not mother of the children, because I haue chosen thee, sayth our Lord.
18I wil send thee helpe my seruantes Isay, and Ieremie: at whose counsel I haue sanctified and prepared for thee twelue trees burdened with diuers fruites,
19and as manie fountaines flowing milke and honie: and seuen most high mountaines, hauing roses and lilies, in the which I wil fil thy children with ioy.
20Iustifie the widow, iudge for the pupil, geue to the poore, defend the orphan, clothe the naked,
21cure the broken and the weake, laugh not a lame man to scorne, defend the lame, and let the blind man come into the sight of my clearnes.
22Kepe the old man and the yong within thy walles,
23Wherasour thou findest the dead, signe them, committing them to the sepulchre, & I wil geue thee the first seate in my resurrection.
24Pause and be quiet my people, because thy rest shal come.
25Nourish thy children good nource, establish their feete.
26Of thy seruantes, whom I haue geuen thee, not one shal perish: for I wil require them of thy number.
27Be not careful: for when the day of tribulation and distresse shal come, others shal weepe and be sorowful, but thou shalt be merie and haue abundance.
28The nations shal enuie thee, and shal be able to doe nothing against thee, sayth our Lord.
29My handes shal couer thee, that thy children see not hel.
30Be ioyful O mother with thy children, because I wil deliuer thee, sayth our Lord.
31Remember thy children that slepe, because I wil bring them out of the sides of the land, and wil shew mercie to them: for I am merciful, sayth the Lord omnipotent.
32Embrace thy children, til I come, and shew mercie to them: for my welles runne ouer, and my grace shal not fayle.
33I Esdras receiued a precept of our Lord in the mount Horeb, that I should goe to Israel. To whom when I came, they refused me, and reiected the commandement of our Lord:
34Therefore to you I say, O nations which heare and vnderstand, expect your pastour, he wil geue you rest euerlasting: for he is nigh at hand, that shal come in the end of the world.
35Be readie to the rewardes of the kingdom, because the perpetual light shal shyne to you for euermore.
36Flee the shadow of this world: receiue the ioyfulnes of your glorie: I testifie my sauiour openly.
37Receiue the gift comended to you, and be ioyful, geuing thankes to him, that hath called you to the heauenlie kingdomes.
38Rise and stand, and see the number of the signed in the feast of our Lord.
39Which are translated from the shadow of the world, haue receiued splendid stoles from our Lord.
40Take thy number O Sion, and shut vp thy whited ones, which haue fulfilled the law of our Lord.
41The number of thy children, whom thou didst desire is fulfilled: besech the imperiof our Lord, that thy people may be sanctified, which is called from the beginning.
42I Esdras saw in the mount Sion a great multitude, which I could not number, and they al praysed our Lord with songues.
43And in the middes of them a yong man of high stature brighter then al they, and he gaue crownes on the head of euerie one, and was more exalted. And I merueled.
44Then I asked an Angel, and sayd: Who are these Lord?
45Who answering sayd to me: These are they that haue put of the mortal cote, and haue put on the immortal, and haue confessed the name of God: now are they crowned, and receiue palmes.
46And I sayd to the Angel: That yong man, who is he, that crowneth them, and geueth palmes into their handes?
47And answering he sayd to me: He is the sonne of God, whom they confessed in the world. And I began to glorifie them, that stood strongly for the name of our Lord.
48Then the Angel sayd to me: Goe, and tel my people, how great, and how manie meruelous thinges of the Lord God thou hast seene.
