Hoshea
Biblical Profile
Hoshea came to power by assassination, striking down King Pekah. From his first day, he was a vassal—Assyria's puppet. Shalmaneser V demanded and received heavy tribute.
The Bible's assessment is nuanced: "He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, but not like the kings of Israel who preceded him." Small comfort. He was less wicked than his predecessors, but his reign ended Israel forever.
Hoshea's fatal error was attempting to shake off Assyria. He stopped paying tribute and sent messengers to Egypt's pharaoh for help. When Shalmaneser discovered the betrayal, he arrested Hoshea and threw him in prison.
Leaderless, Israel faced the Assyrian siege. Samaria held for three years before falling in 722 BC. The population was deported to various locations in the Assyrian empire: Halah, Gozan, and Media. The ten northern tribes were scattered, never to return as a unified people.
The biblical historian explains clearly: this happened because of generations of sin. The Israelites had worshiped other gods, built high places, set up sacred stones and Asherah poles. God sent prophet after prophet, but they would not listen. Now the patience ended.
Hoshea was the last. After him, the northern kingdom ceased to exist.
Theological Significance
Hoshea shows that individual moderation doesn't cancel accumulated national sin. He was less evil than his predecessors, but the weight of generations still fell.
Seeking help from Egypt instead of repenting to God repeated an ancient pattern. Trusting other nations instead of trusting God never succeeds.
The fall of Israel fulfilled Moses' warnings in Deuteronomy. Disobedience would mean exile. Centuries of prophetic warnings culminated in 722 BC.
