Ahimelech
"The high priest at Nob who helped David and was killed by Saul for it."
Biblical Profile
Ahimelek was the high priest at the city of Nob during a tumultuous period for Israel. He is primarily known for his fateful encounter with David, who was fleeing from the jealous King Saul. When David arrived at Nob, Ahimelek, assuming David was on a mission for the king, provided him with food (the consecrated showbread) and the sword of Goliath, which was being kept at the sanctuary. This act of hospitality was observed by Doeg the Edomite, Saul's chief shepherd. When Saul learned of Ahimelek's assistance to David, he summoned the priests of Nob and accused them of conspiracy. Despite Ahimelek's defense of his innocence and his ignorance of the rift between Saul and David, the king ordered their execution. The royal guards refused to kill the priests, but Doeg complied, massacring Ahimelek, eighty-four other priests, and the entire population of Nob.
Theological Significance
Ahimelek's provision of the showbread to David is cited by Jesus in the New Evidence illustrate that mercy and human need take precedence over strict ceremonial law (Matthew 12:3-4). His life also represents the collateral damage caused by the spiritual decline and paranoia of King Saul. The massacre at Nob partially fulfilled the prophecy against the house of Eli, as Ahimelek was a descendant of Eli through Phinehas and Ahitub. His son Abiathar was the only one to escape, eventually becoming high priest under David.
