Ebed-Melech
"An Ethiopian eunuch in the court of King Zedekiah who interceded for Jeremiah and rescued him from the muddy cistern."
Biblical Profile
In the midst of the apostasy and cruelty of the leaders of Judah, Ebed-Melech ("Servant of the King"), an Ethiopian foreigner, shone for his courage and compassion. When the princes threw the prophet Jeremiah into a waterless cistern to die of hunger, Ebed-Melech risked his own life by presenting himself publicly before King Zedekiah to denounce this wickedness. With the king's authorization, Ebed-Melech took men and ropes, and with great tenderness (using old rags so as not to hurt the prophet's armpits) pulled Jeremiah out of the well. For this act of kindness toward God's servant, Jehovah sent him a personal message of salvation through Jeremiah, promising him that he would not fall by the sword when the Babylonians took the city, because "you have trusted in me." Ebed-Melech is an example of how God honors those who honor His prophets, regardless of their nationality.
