Biblical courage is fundamentally distinct from worldly bravado, stoic indifference, or mere physical fearlessness. In the biblical narrative, genuine courage is the fruit of reverent faith, an unshakable resolve grounded in the character and presence of the Almighty God. When Moses charged Joshua to lead Israel across the Jordan to face fortified cities and giant adversaries, the command was not rooted in human military prowess, but in a divine promise: Be strong and courageous... for the Lord your God goes with you (Deuteronomy 31:6; Joshua 1:9).

Throughout the Old Testament, courage flourishes precisely when human resources fail. David stood before Goliath not with superior physical strength, but with spiritual valor, declaring that the battle belongs to Yahweh (1 Samuel 17:47). The prophet Nehemiah, facing armed plots against Jerusalem's walls, refused to run, declaring: Should a man like me flee? (Nehemiah 6:11). The fear of God expels the fear of man, because the sovereign King of the universe holds every creature and circumstance in His hands.

In the New Testament, Christian boldness (parrhesia) becomes the hallmark of the early church empowered by the Holy Spirit. When threatened with imprisonment and death by the Sanhedrin, Peter and John boldly answered: We cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard (Acts 4:20). Believers are summoned to be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power (Ephesians 6:10). Our supreme exemplar is Christ, who set His face like flint toward Jerusalem and conquered death, giving His disciples courage to overcome the world.
