Topheth

Place of Horror

"They have built the high places of Topheth in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to burn their sons and daughters in the fire—something I did not command, nor did it enter my mind." Topheth was located in the Hinnom Valley, just south of Jerusalem's walls. Here, Israelites committed the unthinkable: they burned their children alive as offerings to Molech. The name may derive from "drum"—drums were beaten to drown out the screams.

Kings Who Burned Their Sons

King Ahaz "burned sacrifices in the Valley of Ben Hinnom and sacrificed his children in the fire, engaging in the detestable practices of the nations the LORD had driven out before the Israelites." Manasseh followed his example (2 Chronicles 33: 6). The very kings who ruled from Jerusalem sacrificed children within sight of the Temple. Israel had become as evil as the Canaanites they replaced—and for the same sin.

Josiah's Defilement

"He desecrated Topheth, which was in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, so no one could use it to sacrifice their son or daughter in the fire to Molek." King Josiah made Topheth unusable—probably by filling it with bones and refuse, making it ceremonially unclean. The place of child sacrifice became a garbage dump. Fires continued burning there, but now they consumed trash, not children. The vilest spot became the foulest dump.

Gehenna: Symbol of Hell

The Valley of Hinnom (Ge - Hinnom in Hebrew) became "Gehenna" in Greek—the word Jesus used for hell. "If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into Gehenna, where the worms that eat them do not die, and the fire is not quenched." The valley of child sacrifice became Scripture's primary image of eternal judgment. Topheth's horror points to hell's reality.
