Obed

Obed appears briefly in Scripture but holds an essential place in redemptive history. He was the son of Boaz the wealthy landowner and Ruth the Moabite widow—a union that itself required legal redemption.

When Obed was born, the women of Bethlehem celebrated with Naomi, his grandmother. "Praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer," they declared. They recognized that through Obed, Naomi's family line—which had seemed extinct when her husband and sons died—would continue.

The text says the women declared, "Naomi has a son!" Though biologically Ruth's child, Obed was counted as Naomi's grandson who would perpetuate her husband Elimelech's name. Naomi became his nurse, and "the women living there" named him Obed, meaning "servant" or "worshiper."

Scripture then provides his lineage: Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David. This single verse bridges generations and connects a Moabite woman's son to Israel's greatest king.

Nothing else is recorded of Obed's personal life. We don't know his occupation, his character, or his actions. His significance lies entirely in his position—son of the kinsman-redeemer, grandfather of the king, ancestor of the Messiah.
