Hilkiah served as the High Priest during the turning-point 18th year of King Josiah's reign. It had been missing or suppressed for generations under the idolatrous reigns of Manasseh and Amon.
Hilkiah did not keep the find to himself but immediately passed it to Shaphan the scribe, who then read it to the king.
