Asher was the eighth son of Jacob, born to Zilpah, the servant of Leah. According to the customs of the age, Leah claimed him as her own, naming him 'Asher' (meaning Happy or Blessed) because of the joy his birth brought her ('The daughters will call me blessed'). He grew up in the household of Jacob, participating in the complex and often conflicted history of the twelve brothers, including the betrayal of Joseph.
When Jacob blessed his sons on his deathbed, he spoke of Asher’s future in agricultural terms: 'His food will be rich; he will provide delicacies fit for a king.'
