What Does Proverbs 3:22 Mean?

The possession of these virtues will provide life for the soul and an adornment for the neck. The soul (nefesh) refers to the entire living person in their vitality and strength. Wisdom and discretion sustain the person from the inside like the fruit of the tree of life mentioned in verse 18. The adornment for the neck is the same image used at the start of the book where instruction was like a garland of grace. What the father first promised as a reward for receiving his words is now described as the result of becoming wise.

This combination of inner vitality and outer display shows how wisdom transforms the whole person. The character that has become a internal reality expresses itself as something that others can see and admire. This is not about performing for an audience but about the natural visibility of a life that is rightly ordered. The ornament mentioned in verse 22 is the sign that the father's instruction has done its work. The student does not just know about wisdom but has become a person who carries its beauty.

Peter speaks about this kind of internal beauty in [1 Peter 3:3-4] where he mentions the hidden person of the heart.
