What Does Proverbs 3:21 Mean?

The father instructs his son to keep sound wisdom and discretion in sight at all times. This return to practical instruction follows the cosmic meditation of the previous verses. Sound wisdom (tushiyah) involves the capacity for effective judgment while discretion (mezimmah) involves careful planning. Both are necessary for navigating the world that God built with the same wisdom. The concern is that a person might let these tools of character slip away through passive neglect rather than active rejection.

Tushiyah and mezimmah together provide the person with a two-sided instrument for daily life. One allows for the correct assessment of a situation while the other provides the foresight to see what results will follow. Proverbs 1:4 originally listed discretion as one of the primary goals for the student. Here in Chapter 3 the father reinforces its value after showing that wisdom is the primary principle of creation itself. The wisdom that fashioned the world is the same wisdom that helps a person choose the right path.

Paul encourages the Ephesians to walk carefully and wisely in [Ephesians 5:15] because the days are evil. This careful walking is the New Testament application of keeping sound wisdom and discretion in sight. Both involve a vigilant and active engagement with how a person moves through the world. The alternative to this vigilance is not neutrality but a gradual drift into the foolishness that Chapter 1 warned against. The person who maintains these tools is the person Paul describes as making the best use of their time.
