What Does Proverbs 3:18 Mean?

Wisdom is a tree of life to those who take hold of her and those who hold her fast are blessed. The tree of life is a powerful image that looks back to the Garden of Eden. In [Genesis 2:9] this tree represented access to the vitality of the Creator. When humanity was expelled from the garden they were cut off from this source of life. Verse 18 places wisdom in that same position. The person who takes hold of her has recovered access to the thing that gives life its deepest quality and lasting duration.

Proverbs uses this tree of life image several times to describe things that restore the soul. Wisdom is the most foundational of these because it is what humanity lost at the fall and what can be found through this pursuit. Holding fast (machaziq) implies a firm grip like a person holding onto a rope. This is an active choice to not let wisdom slip away through neglect. The blessed people of verse 18 are those who have secured their hold on the very thing that connects them to the life of God.

The tree of life reappears in the final vision of the new creation in [Revelation 22:2]. It stands by the river of the water of life for the healing of the nations. What was lost in the beginning and promised through wisdom in Proverbs is fully restored in the end. The gift that the father promises to the son is a real participation in the life that God provides both now and forever. Wisdom is more than just a set of rules as she is the gateway back to the presence of the Giver of life.
