What Does Proverbs 3:17 Mean?

The ways of wisdom are described as pleasant while all her paths are identified as peace. This verse provides a description of the texture of a life lived wisely. Pleasantness (no'am) and peace (shalom) are qualities that the person experiences from within. This counters the idea that a virtuous life must be difficult or joyless. The father insists that the roads of wisdom are good to travel. The person who walks in them is not just enduring duty but is experiencing the texture of a life that is put together correctly.

This pleasantness is not the same as a life free from all trouble. Proverbs has already mentioned the discipline and reproof that wisdom requires. Instead the peace of verse 17 is the wellbeing of a person who is rightly related to God and others. Shalom describes a integrated life where the foundation is secure even when external circumstances are hard. The wicked have no peace as seen in [Isaiah 57:21]. But the wise have a internal shalom because their life is built on the order that God established for his world.

Jesus offer a similar peace to his disciples in [John 14:27]. He says that he gives a peace that is not like what the world gives. This peace does not depend on outward circumstances and cannot be taken away by human events. The pleasantness and peace mentioned in verse 17 are the Old Testament version of this divine gift.
