What Does Proverbs 15:7 Mean?

The conversations of a person who has been shaped by the wisdom of the Lord serve as a means of spreading truth and hope to everyone they meet. Like a farmer sowing seeds in a field, the wise individual uses their words to plant ideas that lead toward life and a healthy understanding of reality. They do not hoard their insights for themselves but are eager to share what they have learned with a spirit of generosity and care. This active dispersal of knowledge is a sign of a heart that is overflowing with the goodness of the Father. However, those who are governed by a foolish and self-centered spirit have nothing of substance to offer. Their hearts are like a dry and empty land that can produce no life-giving fruit for the community.

The dispersal of knowledge (daat) is a vital function for the health of a society and the growth of the individual. The lips of the wise (hakam) are described as a source of benefit for all who listen, reflecting the divine character of a God who is constantly revealing himself to his people. This is not a matter of intellectual superiority but of a commitment to the truth that is lived out in daily life. The heart of the foolish (kesil), however, is described as being in a state of unreliability and lack of focus. They cannot share what they have not first gathered in their own souls. The Creator has established a world where wisdom is meant to be shared for the sake of the common good. God delights in those who use their speech to lead others toward the light.

The Apostle Paul spent his life traveling from city to city, dispersing the knowledge of the mystery of Christ to all who would listen (Colossians 1:28). He was driven by a deep conviction that the truth of the gospel was the only thing capable of bringing true life and peace to the world. Jesus described his disciples as the light of the world, telling them that a lamp is not lit to be put under a bowl but to be placed on a stand where it can give light to everyone in the house. By sharing the message of the cross and the hope of the resurrection, the follower of Jesus participates in the great mission of the Lord to reconcile the world to himself. The Spirit empowers the believer to speak with a clarity and a love that reveals the heart of the Savior.
