The Soft Answer
Chapter 15 focuses on the "atmosphere" created by our words and the heart-stance that lies beneath them. The setting is any place of potential conflict, where a "soft answer" turns away wrath, but a "harsh word" stirs up anger. It emphasizes that the "Tongue of the Wise" commends knowledge, while the "Mouth of Fools" pours out folly. This introduces the idea that our speech is the primary thermometer of our spiritual health. It is a world where the "Eyes of the Lord" are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.
The narrative movement traces the relationship between "Correction" and "Joy." It observes that a "gentle tongue" is a "Tree of Life," but perverseness in it "breaks the spirit." The text contrasts the "scoffer" who hates to be reproved with the "wise man" who loves instruction. This leads to the observation that a "Glad Heart" makes a cheerful face, showing how the internal joy of the King's presence affects a person's entire countenance. The movement is from the "Internal Altar" of the heart to the "External Peace" of the community. It is a vision of of a heart at rest.
Theologically, the "Sacrifice of the Wicked" is called an abomination to the Lord, while the "Prayer of the Upright" is His delight. This teaches that God cares more about the "Heart" than the ritual, and that "Righteousness" is a way of life, not just a set of religious actions. The "Fear of the Lord" is identified as the "Instruction in Wisdom," and "Humility" is the necessary precursor to honor. The "Path of Life" is described as leading "Upward," turning the traveler away from the "Sheol below." True worship is a result of His Presence. Our peace is His Character.
Jesus Christ is the One whose "soft answer" to the Father’s justice turned away the wrath that was due to us. Christ is the "Healing Tongue" whose words brought life to the dead and whose "prayer" is the eternal delight of the Father. While we were "scoffers" who hated reproof, He became the "Humble Servant" who bore our discipline to give us His joy. This chapter reminds us that because our King "keeps watch over us," we can walk in the light of His favor. Our peace is found in His Presence.
