What Does Proverbs 15:24 Mean?

The direction of a wise person's life is compared to a path that moves steadily upward, leading them toward an experience of vitality and a closer alignment with the purposes of the Lord. The Lord has established a moral order where wisdom generates a predictable lifting of the human soul. To be wise (maskil) is to recognize that our choices have consequences that reach beyond the grave. The path that moves upward is one of discipline, integrity, and a steady trust in the character of the Creator. This orientation preserves the individual from the steady decline into a hollow and unstable life. The Lord himself is the one who empowers the believer for the climb, providing his Spirit to help us navigate the difficulties of the ascent. God honors the person who chooses the high road of loyalty to him.

The Apostle Paul spoke of this upward calling when he told the believers in Philippi that he was pressing on toward the goal to win the prize for which God had called him heavenward in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14). He urged them to set their minds on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God, rather than on the things of the earth. Jesus himself opened the way for us by his own ascension, proving that the path of life leads directly into the presence of the Father. He promised his disciples that he was going to prepare a place for its members, and that he would return to take them to be with him. The follower of Jesus lives with a hope that is anchored in the world to come, choosing to walk in a way that reflects the glory of their final destination.
