What Does Proverbs 15:2 Mean?

The speech of a person is a clear indicator of the state of their internal life and the quality of their choices. An individual who has spent time learning from experienced mentors and reflecting on the truth will find that their conversations are helpful and timely. They know how to share knowledge in a way that others can actually hear and apply, choosing the right words for the right moment. Their tongue is like a well-tended garden that produces fruit that is both nourishing and attractive. In contrast, those who refuse to learn often find their speech becoming a source of confusion. They speak without thinking, pouring out a constant stream of empty and unmeasured thoughts that reveal a lack of internal order.

The stewardship of knowledge (daat) is a responsibility that every person carries before the Lord. To use knowledge rightly means to handle it with a sense of care for the person listening, ensuring that truth is presented with a spirit of love and humility. The mouth of fools (kesil), however, behaves like a broken pipe that cannot be shut off, gushing out foolishness that provides no value to the listener. This lack of verbal restraint is a sign of a heart that is not yet resting in the presence of God. The Creator has given us the gift of language to lead others toward the light, not to add to the noise of a broken world. God watches how we handle the truth in our daily interactions.

The Apostle Paul emphasized the importance of godly speech when he told the Colossians to let their conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt (Colossians 4:6). He understood that the way we speak to those outside the church is a reflection of the reality of the gospel within us. Jesus taught that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks, showing that our words are the overflow of our characters. The New Testament urges us to use our speech only for what is helpful for building others up according to their needs. The believer seeks to reflect the clarity and the compassion of the Lord, who spoke the world into existence and whose words bring life and hope to all who hear them.
