What Does II Kings 17:6 Mean?

The catastrophic fall of Samaria: "In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria... and in the cities of the Medes." After more than two centuries of rebellion, the Northern Kingdom ceases to exist. The ten tribes are violently uprooted from the land of promise and scattered across the sprawling, pagan territories of the Assyrian Empire.

This deportation is not merely a military defeat, but the ultimate expression of covenantal exile. The Lord oversees the "carrying away" of the nation, demonstrating that His promise of the land was inextricably linked to the presence of His holiness. Because Israel refused to walk in the statutes of the Lord, they were handed over to serve the statutes of foreign masters, their identity dissolving into the distant, silent cities of their own unholy choosing.

The Lord Jesus is the Good Shepherd who has come into the "cities of the Medes" and every other place of human exile to carry His scattered sheep home to the Father. He gathers true Israel not into a fragile geographic territory, but into the eternal kingdom of His grace. He secures our lasting inheritance, guaranteeing that those who belong to Him will never be ultimately uprooted or carried away from the safety of His unending presence (John 10:16).
