What Does Proverbs 9:9 Mean?

The father concludes his diagnostic with the inevitable trajectory of the two different characters. Because the wise man receives correction with love, the delivery of instruction actually makes him still wiser. The addition of teaching to a righteous man guarantees an increase in learning. The wise man is described as an expanding capacity; he never believes he has arrived, so he never stops growing.

This exposes the terrifying momentum of human character. The simple or the scoffer rejects instruction, locking themselves into a permanent cycle of decreasing intelligence and increasing destruction. The wise man receives the instruction, increasing his capacity to receive even more instruction in the future. The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer in the economy of wisdom. The initial stance of the heart dictates the final intellectual destination.

Jesus articulated this exact law of spiritual acceleration, stating that to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away (Matthew 13:12). The increasing learning of the righteous man in the proverb and the multiplying abundance in the Gospel describe the identical, unavoidable momentum of the human heart toward or away from the truth.
