What Does Proverbs 6:18 Mean?

The list continues to move inward and downward. The heart is the command center where the arrogant eyes, lying tongue, and violent hands receive their orders. Before the feet ever move toward violence, the mind has already manufactured the strategy. The feet are described as rushing toward the execution of the plan, displaying an eager, enthusiastic appetite for doing what is wrong.

The phrase describing wicked plans uses the same language applied to a craftsman working metal or wood. The wicked heart applies intense, sustained effort to construct evil. The hurrying feet illustrate that the sinner is not reluctantly yielding to temptation, but sprinting toward it. The LORD hates this condition because it represents a human being functioning exactly opposite to their original, creative design.

Paul provides the identical description of unredeemed humanity, quoting the Psalms to demonstrate that their feet are swift to shed blood and their completely darkened minds do not fear God (Romans 3:15). The sprinting feet of the proverb and the swift feet in Romans describe the exact same enthusiastic rush toward destruction. A heart completely aligned against God will always produce feet that run the wrong way.
