What Does Proverbs 3:4 Mean?

The result of carrying these virtues is the finding of favor and good success before God and people. This combination of favor and success is what Joseph experienced in [Genesis 39:21] and what Samuel experienced in [1 Samuel 2:26]. In these cases, the blessing of God was expressed through the way other people perceived and treated them. Wisdom produces a life that is recognizably good which results in fruit that other people can see and trust. The divine favor and the human recognition are two sides of the same blessing.

Good success (sekhel tov) involves the kind of prudent insight that others observe and value over time. A person who lives with steadfast love and faithfulness develops a reputation because their behavior is consistent and worthy of trust. This is not about managing an image but about the outward visibility of an inward quality. Proverbs treats a good name as valuable because it is the sign of a character that has been shaped by good principles. The favor that results from this character is a durable fruit of the wise life.

[Luke 2:52] says that Jesus increased in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and people. This is the exact wording of verse 4 applied to the development of Jesus when he was a boy. What the father describes as the result of binding virtues to the heart, Luke observes as the trajectory of the Son of God. The favor Jesus found was the fruit of who he was rather than just what he did. The promise of verse 4 and the description in Luke show that the person aligned with God's character finds fruit that registers in both realms.
