What Does Proverbs 3:26 Mean?

The reason for this confidence is that the LORD himself will be the source of security for the son. He will keep the foot of the person from being caught in any snare that is set for them. This confidence (kesel) refers to a robust and deep reliance like the trunk of a tree. The protection mentioned here is very precise as it occurs at the moment of actual vulnerability. It is not protection from a world that has no snares but protection that operates when the person encounters a trap on their way.

The image of the foot being kept from a net or snare appears throughout the Psalms. [Psalm 25:15] says that the eyes of the psalmist are on the LORD who will pluck his feet from the net. [Psalm 116:8] also celebrates how God delivered the feet of his servant from stumbling. In these cases the protection is an active and personal engagement by God with the specific dangers the person faces. Verse 26 is the statement of this truth that the Psalms celebrate as an experience of God's care.

Jesus prays for this kind of protection in [John 17:11] where he asks the Father to keep his disciples in his name. He states that he has guarded them and not one has been lost during his time with them. The keeping that Jesus describes is the same keeping that verse 26 promises. It is a relational protection from a God who is himself the source of confidence for his people. The LORD does not just provide a safety system but provides himself as the one who watches over the path.
