What Does Proverbs 3:24 Mean?

The security of the wise extends from waking activities to the rest of the night. If a person lies down they will not be afraid and their sleep will be sweet. Night is the time when a person is most vulnerable and when fears can become overwhelming. The promise here is that the person who has kept wisdom intact does not spend their nights in anxiety. Their sleep is restful because their life has been rightly ordered and they have nothing that they need to fear once the light of day has gone.

The absence of fear at night is a hallmark of the well formed person who has been diligent in their choices. [Proverbs 31:21] says this about the excellent wife who is not afraid of the winter for her house. The sweet sleep of verse 24 is the fruit of integrity and the knowledge that one has dealt rightly with the day's obligations. It is the natural rest of someone who has nothing chasing them into the dark. Wisdom provides the inner peace that allows for physical recovery and refreshment during the night.

Jesus offers a similar quality of rest in [Matthew 11:28] when he invites the heavy laden to come to him. He promises rest for the soul to those who learn from him. While Jesus' rest addresses the burden of sin it also provides the same peace that verse 24 describes. The person who rests in the wisdom of God and the grace of Jesus can lie down without fear. They know that what they are resting in is greater than whatever the night might bring against them. Both provide a sleep that is truly sweet.
