What Does Proverbs 21:6 Mean?

The pursuit of material wealth through the use of a lying tongue reveals an internal spirit of manipulation that eventually results in a state of spiritual ruin and loss. When an individual achieves a measure of success through deception, they are participating in a spirit of rebellion that treats the neighbor as a resource for their own achievement. This kind of prosperity is like a fleeting vapor that vanishes in the light of the truth, leaving the person in a state of relational exhaustion and deep and lasting isolation. This habit acts as a source of blindness, as it obscures the moral weight of our behavior and the reality of a shared responsibility for the character of the community. There is no source of rest in a life built on a lie.

The getting of treasures by a lying (she-qer) tongue is a fleeting vapor and a snare (mo-qes) of death. This comparison highlights the connection between our speech and our eventual survival in a broken world. The Father registers every transaction and every secret intent, identifying those who choose a path of resistance against the requirements of his kingdom. To value a quick profit more than a clean conscience is a sign of a heart that has lost its orientation to the divine character. The Creator maintains a durable oversight of every heart, ensuring that his own character is realized in every situation. Justice is a measure of our loyalty. Wisdom is the only source of a durable security. Goodness is found in Christ.

Jesus Christ warned his disciples about the dangers of a heart that was divided by the desire for worldly riches, calling them to seek first the kingdom of the Father and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33). He knew that the only way to escape the spiritual blindness of the world was to attend to the interior reality of the heart. He is the Word made flesh, the source of a life that survivors even the greatest trials and revealed the depth of the mercy available at the cross. Focusing on the Savior provides the strength needed to handle our social interactions with integrity. True wealth is found in the Lord.
