What Does Proverbs 17:4 Mean?

The quality of a person's speech and the nature of the information they choose to believe are reliable indicators of their internal character. An individual whose heart is governed by a spirit of malice will naturally be attracted to words that cause trouble and to rumors that damage the peace of their community. They find a kind of dark satisfaction in hearing about the failures of others, using their ears as a field for the seeds of resentment and strife. This orientation is a sign of a soul that has not yet found its rest in the truth, as it seeks to build its own sense of importance on the destruction of the good reputation of its neighbors.

The description of an evil-doer (me-ra) listening (qa-shab) to wicked lips and a liar giving ear to a mischievous (ha-wah) tongue highlights the relational weight of our communication. The Lord identities himself as the one who protects the vulnerable from the heat of a malicious tongue, registering every word and every motive. To act as a consumer of deceit is to participate in a way of life that leads toward a steady decline into a hollow and unstable state. The Creator honors the person who values harmony and integrity more than their own urge to hear or spread a damaging story. He maintains a firm and active oversight of our social interactions, regarding our loyalty to the truth as a measure of our loyalty to him.

The Apostle Paul urged the believers to put away all falsehood and to speak the truth with their neighbors, for we are members of one another (Ephesians 4:25). He knew that the health of the church depended on the honesty and the transparency of its members. Jesus taught that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks, and he warned that we will give an account for every careless word. He himself was the truth made flesh, the one who calls us to a life of sincere worship and honest dealing. By abiding in the love of the Savior and relying on the power of the Spirit, the follower of Jesus is empowered to be a source of life and peace. True communication is a fruit of the relationship between the redeemed and the Redeemer.
