The moment these cowardly deserters physically hear that the Philistines are fleeing, they instantly crawl out of the darkness and "follow in relentless pursuit through the battle," suddenly morphing from trembling cave-dwellers into aggressive, bloodthirsty pursuers only after the risk has been eliminated.

The undeniable reality of human leadership is that vast majorities of the congregation will sit in the dark caves of passive observation until the bold, solitary risks taken by a tiny remnant finally generate unmistakable, explosive success. There is no shortage of enthusiastic participants eagerly willing to bravely chase a retreating enemy or zealously claim the ultimate spoils of a victory already won. We must urgently pray that God would cleanse our hearts of this pathetic, cowardly, "bandwagon" spirituality, crying out for the anointing of Jonathan, who willingly stepped out of the cave precisely when the sheer cliff face was guarded.

The pathetic, delayed courage of the hiding Israelites radically contrasts with the supreme courage established by the Lord Jesus Christ for His persecuted, despised church. The Savior commands believers not to cower in the caves of the culture while attempting to hide their blinding theological light under a pathetic basket, but to deliberately, physically place it openly on a stand, ensuring it illuminates the entire dark house (Matthew 5:14-16). Christ demands a fierce, aggressive, visible faith that intentionally initiates the eternal conflict refusing to wait for the world to retreat before finally preaching the gospel.
