John 8

¹But Jesus continued on to the Mount of Olives.

²And early in the morning, he went again to the temple; and all the people came to him. And sitting down, he taught them.

³Now the scribes and Pharisees brought forward a woman caught in adultery, and they stood her in front of them.

⁴And they said to him: “Teacher, this woman was just now caught in adultery.

⁵And in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such a one. Therefore, what do you say?”

⁶But they were saying this to test him, so that they might be able to accuse him. Then Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the earth.

⁷And then, when they persevered in questioning him, he stood upright and said to them, “Let whoever is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her.”

⁸And bending down again, he wrote on the earth.

⁹But upon hearing this, they went away, one by one, beginning with the eldest. And Jesus alone remained, with the woman standing in front of him.

¹⁰Then Jesus, raising himself up, said to her: “Woman, where are those who accused you? Has no one condemned you?”

¹¹And she said, “No one, Lord.” Then Jesus said: “Neither will I condemn you. Go, and now do not choose to sin anymore.”

¹²Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me does not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

¹³And so the Pharisees said to him, “You offer testimony about yourself; your testimony is not true.”

¹⁴Jesus responded and said to them: “Even though I offer testimony about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going.

¹⁵You judge according to the flesh. I do not judge anyone.

¹⁶And when I do judge, my judgment is true. For I am not alone, but it is I and he who sent me: the Father.

¹⁷And it is written in your law that the testimony of two men is true.

¹⁸I am one who offers testimony about myself, and the Father who sent me offers testimony about me.”

¹⁹Therefore, they said to him, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered: “You know neither me, nor my Father. If you did know me, perhaps you would know my Father also.”

²⁰Jesus spoke these words at the treasury, while teaching in the temple. And no one apprehended him, because his hour had not yet come.

²¹Therefore, Jesus again spoke to them: “I am going, and you shall seek me. And you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you are not able to go.”

²²And so the Jews said, “Is he going to kill himself, for he said: ‘Where I am going, you are not able to go?’ ”

²³And he said to them: “You are from below. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world.

²⁴Therefore, I said to you, that you will die in your sins. For if you will not believe that I am, you will die in your sin.”

²⁵And so they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them: “The Beginning, who is also speaking to you.

²⁶I have much to say about you and to judge. But he who sent me is true. And what I have heard from him, this I speak within the world.”

²⁷And they did not realize that he was calling God his Father.

²⁸And so Jesus said to them: “When you will have lifted up the Son of man, then you shall realize that I am, and that I do nothing of myself, but just as the Father has taught me, so do I speak.

²⁹And he who sent me is with me, and he has not abandoned me alone. For I always do what is pleasing to him.”

³⁰As he was speaking these things, many believed in him.

³¹Therefore, Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him: “If you will abide in my word, you will truly be my disciples.

³²And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.”

³³They answered him: “We are the offspring of Abraham, and we have never been a slave to anyone. How can you say, ‘You shall be set free?’ ”

³⁴Jesus answered them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, that everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.

³⁵Now the slave does not abide in the house for eternity. Yet the Son does abide in eternity.

³⁶Therefore, if the Son has set you free, then you will truly be free.

³⁷I know that you are sons of Abraham. But you are seeking to kill me, because my word has not taken hold in you.

³⁸I speak what I have seen with my Father. And you do what you have seen with your father.”

³⁹They responded and said to him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them: “If you are the sons of Abraham, then do the works of Abraham.

⁴⁰But now you are seeking to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you, which I have heard from God. This is not what Abraham did.

⁴¹You do the works of your father.” Therefore, they said to him: “We were not born out of fornication. We have one father: God.”

⁴²Then Jesus said to them: “If God were your father, certainly you would love me. For I proceeded and came from God. For I did not come from myself, but he sent me.

⁴³Why do you not recognize my speech? It is because you are not able to hear my word.

⁴⁴You are of your father, the devil. And you will carry out the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning. And he did not stand in the truth, because the truth is not in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks it from his own self. For he is a liar, and the father of lies.

⁴⁵But if I speak the truth, you do not believe me.

⁴⁶Which of you can convict me of sin? If I speak the truth to you, why do you not believe me?

⁴⁷Whoever is of God, hears the words of God. For this reason, you do not hear them: because you are not of God.”

⁴⁸Therefore, the Jews responded and said to him, “Are we not correct in saying that you are a Samaritan, and that you have a demon?”

⁴⁹Jesus responded: “I do not have a demon. But I honor my Father, and you have dishonored me.

⁵⁰But I am not seeking my own glory. There is One who seeks and judges.

⁵¹Amen, amen, I say to you, if anyone will have kept my word, he will not see death for eternity.”

⁵²Therefore, the Jews said: “Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham is dead, and the Prophets; and yet you say, ‘If anyone will have kept my word, he shall not taste death for eternity.’

⁵³Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. So who do you make yourself to be?”

⁵⁴Jesus responded: “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me. And you say about him that he is your God.

⁵⁵And yet you have not known him. But I know him. And if I were to say that I do not know him, then I would be like you, a liar. But I know him, and I keep his word.

⁵⁶Abraham, your father, rejoiced that he might see my day; he saw it and was glad.”

⁵⁷And so the Jews said to him, “You have not yet reached fifty years, and you have seen Abraham?”

⁵⁸Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am.”

⁵⁹Therefore, they took up stones to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself, and he departed from the temple.

¹And Jesus went unto mount Olivet.

²And early in the morning he came again into the temple: and all the people came to him. And sitting down he taught them.

³And the scribes and Pharisees bring unto him a woman taken in adultery: and they set her in the midst,

⁴And said to him: Master, this woman was even now taken in adultery.

⁵Now Moses in the law commanded us to stone such a one. But what sayest thou?

⁶And this they said tempting him, that they might accuse him. But Jesus bowing himself down, wrote with his finger on the ground.

⁷When therefore they continued asking him, he lifted up himself and said to them: He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

⁸And again stooping down, he wrote on the ground.

⁹But they hearing this, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest. And Jesus alone remained, and the woman standing in the midst.

¹⁰Then Jesus lifting up himself, said to her: Woman, where are they that accused thee? Hath no man condemned thee?

¹¹Who said: No man, Lord. And Jesus said: Neither will I condemn thee. Go, and now sin no more.

¹²Again therefore, Jesus spoke to: them, saying: I am the light of the world. He that followeth me walketh not in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

¹³The Pharisees therefore said to him: Thou givest testimony of thyself. Thy testimony is not true.

¹⁴Jesus answered and said to them: Although I give testimony of myself, my testimony is true: for I know whence I came and whither I go.

¹⁵You judge according to the flesh: I judge not any man.

¹⁶And if I do judge, my judgment is true: because I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.

¹⁷And in your law it is written that the testimony of two men is true.

¹⁸I am one that give testimony of myself: and the Father that sent me giveth testimony of me.

¹⁹They said therefore to him: Where is thy Father? Jesus answered: Neither me do you know, nor my Father. If you did know me, perhaps you would know my Father also.

²⁰These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, teaching in the temple: and no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

²¹Again therefore Jesus said to them: I go: and you shall seek me. And you shall die in your sin. Whither I go, you cannot come.

²²The Jews therefore said: Will he kill himself, because he said: Whither I go you cannot come?

²³And he said to them: You are from beneath: I am from above. You are of this world: I am not of this world.

²⁴Therefore I said to you that you shall die in your sins. For if you believe not that I am he, you shall die in your sin.

²⁵They said therefore to him: Who art thou? Jesus said to them: The beginning, who also speak unto you.

²⁶Many things I have to speak and to judge of you. But he that sent me, is true: and the things I have heard of him, these same I speak in the world.

²⁷And they understood not that he called God his Father.

²⁸Jesus therefore said to them: When you shall have lifted up, the Son of man, then shall you know that I am he and that I do nothing of myself. But as the Father hath taught me, these things I speak.

²⁹And he that sent me is with me: and he hath not left me alone. For I do always the things that please him.

³⁰When he spoke these things, many believed in him.

³¹Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed him: If you continue in my word, you shall be my disciples indeed.

³²And you shall know the truth: and the truth shall make you free.

³³They answered him: We are the seed of Abraham: and we have never been slaves to any man. How sayest thou: You shall be free?

³⁴Jesus answered them: Amen, amen, I say unto you that whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.

³⁵Now the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the son abideth for ever.

³⁶If therefore the son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.

³⁷I know that you are the children of Abraham: but you seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.

³⁸I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and you do the things that you have seen with your father.

³⁹They answered and said to him: Abraham is our father. Jesus saith them: If you be the children of Abraham, do the works of Abraham.

⁴⁰But now you seek to kill me, a man who have spoken the truth to you, which I have heard of God. This Abraham did not.

⁴¹You do the works of your father. They said therefore to him: We are not born of fornication: we have one Father, even God.

⁴²Jesus therefore said to them: If God were your Father, you would indeed love me. For from God I proceeded and came. For I came not of myself: but he sent me.

⁴³Why do you not know my speech? Because you cannot hear my word.

⁴⁴You are of your father the devil: and the desires of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning: and he stood not in the truth, because truth is not in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.

⁴⁵But if I say the truth, you believe me not.

⁴⁶Which of you shall convince me of sin? If I say the truth to you, why do you not believe me:

⁴⁷He that is of God heareth the words of God. Therefore you hear them not, because you are not of God.

⁴⁸The Jews therefore answered and said to him: Do not we say well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a devil?

⁴⁹Jesus answered: I have not a devil: but I honour my Father. And you have dishonoured me.

⁵⁰But I seek not my own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.

⁵¹Amen, amen, I say to you: If any man keep my word, he shall not see death for ever.

⁵²The Jews therefore said: Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets: and thou sayest: If any man keep my word, he shall not taste death for ever.

⁵³Art thou greater than our father Abraham who is dead? And the prophets are dead. Whom dost thou make thyself?

⁵⁴Jesus answered: If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father that glorifieth me, of whom you say that he is your God.

⁵⁵And you have not known him: but I know him. And if I shall say that I know him not, I shall be like to you, a liar. But I do know him and do keep his word.

⁵⁶Abraham your father rejoiced that he might see my day: he saw it and was glad.

⁵⁷The Jews therefore said to him: Thou art not yet fifty years old. And hast thou seen Abraham?

⁵⁸Jesus said to them: Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham was made, I AM.

⁵⁹They took up stones therefore to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.
