John 6

¹After these things, Jesus traveled across the sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.

²And a great multitude was following him, for they saw the signs that he was accomplishing toward those who were infirm.

³Therefore, Jesus went onto a mountain, and he sat down there with his disciples.

⁴Now the Passover, the feast day of the Jews, was near.

⁵And so, when Jesus had lifted up his eyes and had seen that a very great multitude came to him, he said to Philip, “From where should we buy bread, so that these may eat?”

⁶But he said this to test him. For he himself knew what he would do.

⁷Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii of bread would not be sufficient for each of them to receive even a little.”

⁸One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him:

⁹“There is a certain boy here, who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are these among so many?”

¹⁰Then Jesus said, “Have the men sit down to eat.” Now, there was much grass in that place. And so the men, in number about five thousand, sat down to eat.

¹¹Therefore, Jesus took the bread, and when he had given thanks, he distributed it to those who were sitting down to eat; similarly also, from the fish, as much as they wanted.

¹²Then, when they were filled, he said to his disciples, “Gather the fragments that are left over, lest they be lost.”

¹³And so they gathered, and they filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which were left over from those who had eaten.

¹⁴Therefore, those men, when they had seen that Jesus had accomplished a sign, they said, “Truly, this one is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

¹⁵And so, when he realized that they were going to come and take him away and make him king, Jesus fled back to the mountain, by himself alone.

¹⁶Then, when evening arrived, his disciples descended to the sea.

¹⁷And when they had climbed into a boat, they went across the sea to Capernaum. And darkness had now arrived, and Jesus had not returned to them.

¹⁸Then the sea was stirred up by a great wind that was blowing.

¹⁹And so, when they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they saw Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing near to the boat, and they were afraid.

²⁰But he said to them: “It is I. Do not be afraid.”

²¹Therefore, they were willing to receive him into the boat. But immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

²²On the next day, the crowd which was standing across the sea saw that there were no other small boats in that place, except one, and that Jesus had not entered into the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had departed alone.

²³Yet truly, other boats came over from Tiberias, next to the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord gave thanks.

²⁴Therefore, when the crowd had seen that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they climbed into the small boats, and they went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

²⁵And when they had found him across the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”

²⁶Jesus answered them and said: “Amen, amen, I say to you, you seek me, not because you have seen signs, but because you have eaten from the bread and were satisfied.

²⁷Do not work for food that perishes, but for that which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him.”

²⁸Therefore, they said to him, “What should we do, so that we may labor in the works of God?”

²⁹Jesus responded and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he sent.”

³⁰And so they said to him: “Then what sign will you do, so that we may see it and believe in you? What will you work?

³¹Our fathers ate manna in the desert, just as it has been written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”

³²Therefore, Jesus said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, Moses did not give you bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.

³³For the bread of God is he who descends from heaven and gives life to the world.”

³⁴And so they said to him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”

³⁵Then Jesus said to them: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

³⁶But I say to you, that even though you have seen me, you do not believe.

³⁷All that the Father gives to me shall come to me. And whoever comes to me, I will not cast out.

³⁸For I descended from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.

³⁹Yet this is the will of the Father who sent me: that I should lose nothing out of all that he has given to me, but that I should raise them up on the last day.

⁴⁰So then, this is the will of my Father who sent me: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

⁴¹Therefore, the Jews murmured about him, because he had said: “I am the living bread, who descended from heaven.”

⁴²And they said: “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? Then how can he say: ‘For I descended from heaven?’ ”

⁴³And so Jesus responded and said to them: “Do not choose to murmur among yourselves.

⁴⁴No one is able to come to me, unless the Father, who has sent me, has drawn him. And I will raise him up on the last day.

⁴⁵It has been written in the Prophets: ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has listened and learned from the Father comes to me.

⁴⁶Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God; this one has seen the Father.

⁴⁷Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me has eternal life.

⁴⁸I am the bread of life.

⁴⁹Your fathers ate manna in the desert, and they died.

⁵⁰This is the bread which descends from heaven, so that if anyone will eat from it, he may not die.

⁵¹I am the living bread, who descended from heaven.

⁵²If anyone eats from this bread, he shall live in eternity. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.”

⁵³Therefore, the Jews debated among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

⁵⁴And so, Jesus said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you.

⁵⁵Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.

⁵⁶For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.

⁵⁷Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.

⁵⁸Just as the living Father has sent me and I live because of the Father, so also whoever eats me, the same shall live because of me.

⁵⁹This is the bread that descends from heaven. It is not like the manna that your fathers ate, for they died. Whoever eats this bread shall live forever.”

⁶⁰He said these things when he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum.

⁶¹Therefore, many of his disciples, upon hearing this, said: “This saying is difficult,” and, “Who is able to listen to it?”

⁶²But Jesus, knowing within himself that his disciples were murmuring about this, said to them: “Does this offend you?

⁶³Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending to where he was before?

⁶⁴It is the Spirit who gives life. The flesh does not offer anything of benefit. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

⁶⁵But there are some among you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who were unbelieving and which one would betray him.

⁶⁶And so he said, “For this reason, I said to you that no one is able to come to me, unless it has been given to him by my Father.”

⁶⁷After this, many of his disciples went back, and they no longer walked with him.

⁶⁸Therefore, Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”

⁶⁹Then Simon Peter answered him: “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.

⁷⁰And we have believed, and we recognize that you are the Christ, the Son of God.”

⁷¹Jesus answered them: “Have I not chosen you twelve? And yet one among you is a devil.”

⁷²Now he was speaking about Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. For this one, even though he was one of the twelve, was about to betray him.

¹After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is that of Tiberias.

²And a great multitude followed him, because they saw the miracles which he did on them that were diseased.

³Jesus therefore went up into a mountain: and there he sat with his disciples.

⁴Now the pasch, the festival day of the Jews, was near at hand.

⁵When Jesus therefore had lifted up his eyes and seen that a very great multitude cometh to him, he said to Philip: Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?

⁶And this he said to try him: for he himself knew what he would do.

⁷Philip answered him: Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them that every one may take a little.

⁸One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, saith to him:

⁹There is a boy here that hath five barley loaves and two fishes. But what are these among so many?

¹⁰Then Jesus said: Make the men sit down. Now, there was much grass in the place. The men therefore sat down, in number about five thousand.

¹¹And Jesus took the loaves: and when he had given thanks, he distributed to them that were set down. In like manner also of the fishes, as much as they would.

¹²And when they were filled, he said to his disciples: gather up the fragments that remain, lest they be lost.

¹³They gathered up therefore and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which remained over and above to them that had eaten.

¹⁴Now those men, when they had seen what a miracle Jesus had done, said: This is of a truth the prophet that is to come into the world.

¹⁵Jesus therefore, when he knew that they would come to take him by force and make him king, fled again into the mountains, himself alone.

¹⁶And when evening was come, his disciples went down to the sea.

¹⁷And when they had gone up into a ship, they went over the sea to Capharnaum. And it was now dark: and Jesus was not come unto them.

¹⁸And the sea arose, by reason of a great wind that blew.

¹⁹When they had rowed therefore about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking upon the sea and drawing nigh to the ship. And they were afraid.

²⁰But he saith to them: It is I. Be not afraid.

²¹They were willing therefore to take him into the ship. And presently the ship was at the land to which they were going.

²²The next day, the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other ship there but one: and that Jesus had not entered into the ship with his disciples, but that his disciples were gone away alone.

²³But other ships came in from Tiberias, nigh unto the place where they had eaten the bread, the Lord giving thanks.

²⁴When therefore the multitude saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they took shipping and came to Capharnaum, seeking for Jesus.

²⁵And when they had found him on that other side of the sea, they said to him: Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

²⁶Jesus answered them and said: Amen, amen, I say to you, you seek me, not because you have seen miracles, but because you did eat of the loaves and were filled.

²⁷Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that which endureth unto life everlasting, which the Son of man will give you. For him hath God, the Father, sealed.

²⁸They said therefore unto him: What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?

²⁹Jesus answered and said to them: This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he hath sent.

³⁰They said therefore to him: What sign therefore dost thou shew that we may see and may believe thee? What dost thou work?

³¹Our fathers did eat manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

³²Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen, I say to you; Moses gave you not bread from heaven, but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

³³For the bread of God is that which cometh down from heaven and giveth life to the world.

³⁴They said therefore unto him: Lord, give us always this bread.

³⁵And Jesus said to them: I am the bread of life. He that cometh to me shall not hunger: and he that believeth in me shall never thirst.

³⁶But I said unto you that you also have seen me, and you believe not.

³⁷All that the Father giveth to me shall come to me: and him that cometh to me, I will not cast out.

³⁸Because I came down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him that sent me.

³⁹Now this is the will of the Father who sent me: that of all that he hath given me, I should lose nothing; but should raise it up again in the last day.

⁴⁰And this is the will of my Father that sent me: that every one who seeth the Son and believeth in him may have life everlasting. And I will raise him up in the last day.

⁴¹The Jews therefore murmured at him, because he had said: I am the living bread which came down from heaven.

⁴²And they said: Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then saith he: I came down from heaven?

⁴³Jesus therefore answered and said to them: Murmur not among yourselves.

⁴⁴No man can come to me, except the Father, who hath sent me, draw him. And I will raise him up in the last day.

⁴⁵It is written in the prophets: And they shall all be taught of God. Every one that hath heard of the Father and hath learned cometh forth me.

⁴⁶Not that any man hath seen the Father: but he who is of God, he hath seen the Father.

⁴⁷Amen, amen, I say unto you: He that believeth in me hath everlasting life.

⁴⁸I am the bread of life.

⁴⁹Your fathers did eat manna in the desert: and are dead.

⁵⁰This is the bread which cometh down from heaven: that if any man eat of it, he may not die.

⁵¹I am the living bread which came down from heaven.

⁵²If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.

⁵³The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying: How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

⁵⁴Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you: except you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you.

⁵⁵He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day.

⁵⁶For my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed.

⁵⁷He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood abideth in me: and I in him.

⁵⁸As the living Father hath sent me and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, the same also shall live by me.

⁵⁹This is the bread that came down from heaven. Not as your fathers did eat manna and are dead. He that eateth this bread shall live for ever.

⁶⁰These things he said, teaching in the synagogue, in Capharnaum.

⁶¹Many therefore of his disciples, hearing it, said: This saying is hard; and who can hear it?

⁶²But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said to them: Doth this scandalize you?

⁶³If then you shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?

⁶⁴It is the spirit that quickeneth: the flesh profiteth nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

⁶⁵But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that did not believe and who he was that would betray him.

⁶⁶And he said: Therefore did I say to you that no man can come to me, unless it be given him by my Father.

⁶⁷After this, many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him.

⁶⁸Then Jesus said to the twelve: Will you also go away?

⁶⁹And Simon Peter answered him: Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life.

⁷⁰And we have believed and have known that thou art the Christ, the Son of God.

⁷¹Jesus answered them: Have not I chosen you twelve? And one of you is a devil.

⁷²Now he meant Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon: for this same was about to betray him, whereas he was one of the twelve.
