I Chronicles 4

¹The sons of Judah: Perez, Hezron, and Carmi, and Hur, and Shobal.

²Truly, Reaiah, the son of Shobal, conceived Jahath; from him were born Ahumai and Lahad. These are the kindred of the Zorathites.

³And this is the stock of Etam: Jezreel, and Ishma, and Idbash. And the name of their sister was Hazzelelponi.

⁴Now Penuel was the father of Gedor, and Ezer was the father of Hushah. These are the sons of Hur, the firstborn of Ephratha, the father of Bethlehem.

⁵Truly, for Ashhur, the father of Tekoa, there were two wives: Helah and Naarah.

⁶And Naarah bore to him: Ahuzzam, and Hepher, and Temeni, and Haahashtari. These are the sons of Naarah.

⁷And the sons of Helah were Zereth, Izhar, and Ethnan.

⁸Now Koz conceived Anub, and Zobebah, and the kindred of Aharhel, the son of Harum.

⁹But Jabez was renowned, more so than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “For I bore him in sorrow.”

¹⁰Truly, Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, “If only, when blessing, you will bless me, and will broaden my borders, and your hand will be with me, and you will cause me not to be oppressed by evil.” And God granted to him the things for which he prayed.

¹¹Now Chelub, the brother of Shuhah, conceived Mehir, who was the father of Eshton.

¹²Then Eshton conceived Bethrapha, and Paseah, and Tehinnah, the father of the city of Nahash. These are the men of Recah.

¹³Now the sons of Kenaz were Othniel and Seraiah. And the sons of Othniel were Hathath and Meonothai.

¹⁴Meonothai conceived Ophrah, but Seraiah conceived Joab, the father of the Valley of Artisans. For indeed, there were artisans there.

¹⁵Truly, the sons of Chelub, the son of Jephunneh, were Iru, and Elah, and Naam. And the sons of Elah: Kenaz.

¹⁶Also, the sons of Jehallelel: Ziph and Ziphah, Tiria and Asarel.

¹⁷And the sons of Ezrah: Jether, and Mered, and Epher, and Jalon; and he conceived Miriam, and Shammai, and Ishbah, the father of Eshtemoa.

¹⁸And then his wife, Judaia, bore Jered, the father of Gedor, and Heber, the father of Soco, and Jekuthiel, the father of Zanoah. Now there were sons of Bithiah, the daughter of Pharaoh, whom Mered married,

¹⁹and sons of his wife Hodiah, the sister of Naham, the father of Keilah the Garmite, and of Eshtemoa, who was from Maacathi.

²⁰And the sons of Shimon: Amnon, and Rinnah, son of Hanan, and Tilon. And the sons of Ishi: Zoheth and Benzoheth.

²¹The sons of Shelah, the son of Judah: Er, the father of Lecah, and Laadah, the father of Mareshah, and the kindred of the house of the workers of fine linen in the house of the oath,

²²and he who caused the sun to stand still, and the men of Lying, and Secure, and Burning, who were leaders in Moab, and who returned into Lehem. Now these words are ancient.

²³These are the potters living in the Plantations and in the Hedges, with a king in his works, and they were dwelling there.

²⁴The sons of Simeon: Nemuel and Jamin, Jarib, Zerah, Shaul;

²⁵Shallum his son, Mibsam his son, Mishma his son.

²⁶The sons of Mishma: Hammuel his son, Zaccur his son, Shimei his son.

²⁷The sons of Shimei were sixteen, and there were six daughters. But his brothers did not have many sons, and the entire kindred was not equal to the sum of the sons of Judah.

²⁸Now they lived in Beersheba, and Moladah, and Hazarshual,

²⁹and in Bilhah, and in Ezem, and in Tolad,

³⁰and in Bethuel, and in Hormah, and in Ziklag,

³¹and in Beth-marcaboth, and in Hazarsusim, and in Bethbiri, and in Shaaraim. These were their cities until king David.

³²And their towns were Etam, and Ain, Rimmon, and Tochen, and Ashan, five cities,

³³with all their villages, on every side of these cities, as far as Baal. This is their habitation and the distribution of the settlements.

³⁴And there were Meshobab and Jamlech, and Joshah, the son of Amaziah,

³⁵and Joel, and Jehu, the son of Joshibiah, the son of Seraiah, the son of Asiel,

³⁶and Elioenai, and Jaakobah, and Jeshohaiah, and Asaiah, and Adiel, and Jesimiel, and Benaiah,

³⁷as well as Ziza, the son of Shiphi, the son of Allon, the son of Jedaiah, the son of Shimri, the son of Shemaiah.

³⁸These were the names of the leaders in their kindred. And they were multiplied greatly within the houses of their marriages.

³⁹And they set out, so that they might enter into Gedor, as far as the eastern valley, and so that they might seek pastures for their flocks.

⁴⁰And they found fat and very good pastures, and a very wide and quiet and fruitful land, in which some from the stock of Ham had lived before.

⁴¹So then, those whose names have been written above, went forth in the days of Hezekiah, the king of Judah. And they struck down the inhabitants who had been found there with their dwellings. And they wiped them out, even to the present day. And they lived in place of them, because they found very fat pastures there.

⁴²Also, some of the sons of Simeon, five hundred men, went away to mount Seir, having as leaders Pelatiah and Neariah and Rephaiah and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi.

⁴³And they struck down the remnant of the Amalekites, those who had been able to escape, and they lived there in place of them, even to this day.

I Chronicles 4

¹The sons of Juda: Phares, Hesron, and Charmi and Hur, and Sobal.

²And Raia the son of Sobal begot Jahath, of whom were born Ahumai, and Laad. These are the families of Sarathi.

³And this is the posterity of Etam: Jezrahel, and Jesema, And Jedebos: and the name of their sister was Asalelphuni.

⁴And Phanuel the father of Gedor, and Ezar the father of Hosa, these are the sons of Hur the firstborn of Ephratha the father of Bethlehem.

⁵And Assur the father of Thecua had two wives, Halaa and Naara:

⁶And Naara bore him Ozam, and Hepher, and Themani, and Ahasthari: these are the sons of Naara.

⁷And the sons of Halaa, Sereth, Isaar, and Ethnan.

⁸And Cos begot Anob, and Soboba, and the kindred of Aharehel the son of Arum.

⁹And Jabes was more honourable than any of his brethren, and his mother called his name Jabes, saying: Because I bore him with sorrow.

¹⁰And Jabes called upon the God of Israel, saying: If blessing thou wilt bless me, and wilt enlarge my borders, and thy hand be with me, and thou save me from being oppressed by evil. And God granted him the things he prayed for.

¹¹And Caleb the brother of Sua begot Mahir, who was the father of Esthon.

¹²And Esthon begot Bethrapha, and Phesse, and Tehinna father of the city of Naas: these are the men of Recha.

¹³And the sons of Cenez were Othoniel, and Saraia. And the sons of Othoniel, Hathath, and Maonathi.

¹⁴Maonathi begot Ophra, and Saraia begot Joab the father of the Valley of artificers: for artificers were there.

¹⁵And the sons of Caleb the son of Jephone, were Hir, and Ela, and Naham. And the sons of Ela: Cenez.

¹⁶The sons also of Jaleleel: Ziph, and Zipha, Thiria and Asrael.

¹⁷And the sons of Esra, Jether, and Mered, and Epher, and Jalon, and he begot Mariam, and Sammai, and Jesba the father of Esthamo.

¹⁸And his wife Judaia, bore Jared the father of Gedor, and Heber the father of Socho, and Icuthiel the father of Zanoe. And these are the sons of Bethia the daughter of Pharao, whom Mered took to wife.

¹⁹And the sons of his wife Odaia the sister of Naham the father of Celia, Garmi, and Esthamo, who was of Machathi.

²⁰The sons also of Simon, Amnon, and Rinna the son of Hanan, and Thilon. And the sons of Jesi Zoheth, and Benzoheth.

²¹The sons of Sela the son of Juda: Her the father of Lecha, and Laada the father of Maresa, and the families of the house of them that wrought fine linen in the House of oath.

²²And he that made the sun to stand, and the men of Lying, and Secure, and Burning, who were princes in Moab, and who returned into Lahem. Now these are things of old.

²³These are the potters, and they dwelt in Plantations, and Hedges, with the king for his works, and they abode there.

²⁵Sellum his son, Mapsam his son, Masma his son.

²⁶The sons of Masma: Hamuel his son, Zachur his son, Semei his son.

²⁷The sons of Semei were sixteen, and six daughters: but his brethren had not many sons, and the whole kindred could not reach to the sum of the children of Juda.

²⁸And they dwelt in Bersabee, and Molada, and Hasarsuhal,

²⁹And in Bala, and in Asom, and in Tholad,

³⁰And in Bathuel, and in Horma, and in Siceleg,

³¹And in Bethmarchaboth, and in Hasarsusim, and in Bethberai, and in Saarim. These were their cities unto the reign of David.

³²Their towns also were Etam, and Aen, Remmon, and Thochen, and Asan, five cities.

³³And all their villages round about these cities as far as Baal. This was their habitation, and the distribution of their dwellings.

³⁴And Mosabab and Jemlech, and Josaphat, the son of Amasias,

³⁵And Joel, and Jehu the son of Josabia the son of Saraia, the son of Asiel,

³⁶And Elioenai, and Jacoba, and Isuhaia, and Asaia, and Adiel, and Ismiel, and Banaia,

³⁷Ziza also the son of Sephei the son of Allon the son of Idaia the son of Semri the son of Samaia.

³⁸These were named princes in their kindreds, and in the houses of their families were multiplied exceedingly.

³⁹And they went forth to enter into Gador as far as to the east side of the valley, to seek pastures for their flocks.

⁴⁰And they found fat pastures, and very good, and a country spacious, and quiet, and fruitful, in which some of the race of Cham had dwelt before.

⁴¹And these whose names are written above, came in the days of Ezechias king of Juda: and they beat down their tents, and slew the inhabitants that were found there, and utterly destroyed them unto this day: and they dwelt in their place, because they found there fat pastures.

⁴²Some also of the children of Simeon, five hundred men, went into mount Seir, having for their captains Phaltias and Naaria and Raphaia and Oziel the sons of Jesi:

⁴³And they slew the remnant of the Amalecites, who had been able to escape, and they dwelt there in their stead unto this day.
