Song of Solomon

This is easily the most controversial book in the Bible because it mentions nothing about the Law, the Covenant, or history. In fact, it barely mentions God. Instead, it is a collection of intense, intimate love poetry between a man and a woman. For centuries, comfortable theologians tried to read this only as an allegory for God's love for Israel or Christ's love for the Church. While those layers exist, the primary meaning is literal.

The book celebrates human sexuality as a gift from the Creator. It affirms that physical intimacy and passion are not shameful but are a key part of the human experience. The poems are mutual; the woman's voice is just as strong and active as the man's.

The climax of the book delivers a powerful theological statement: "Love is as strong as death." In a world of "Hevel" (smoke) and death (as seen in Ecclesiastes), love is the one enduring flame that reflects God's own nature. With this affirmation of love, the "Wisdom" section concludes, and we move into the voice of the "Major Prophets," starting with Isaiah.
