The Prophet's Call

Jeremiah 1 introduces the young Jeremiah, the son of Hilkiah, who is summoned by the Lord to be a "prophet to the nations" during the final years of the Kingdom of Judah. The setting is the village of Anathoth, where the young man attempts to resist the divine call by pleading his youth and lack of eloquence. This starts with the monumental declaration of God’s sovereignty over the womb: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you." It establishes that the prophetic office is not a human selection but a divine appointment that precedes the prophet’s own existence.

The story follows two inaugural visions: the "almond branch" (the watching tree), signifying that God is watching over His word to perform it, and the "boiling pot" tilting from the north, signifying the coming disaster from the empires. Jeremiah portrays the Lord touching his mouth to put His words there, granting him authority "over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to break down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant." Jesus Christ is the one who was perfectly "consecrated before the womb" for the salvation of the world, whose words literally destroyed the power of sin and planted the Kingdom of God. He is the ultimate "Almond Branch" who watched over the Father’s word until it was fulfilled on the cross. While Jeremiah was afraid of his youth, Christ stood in the temple as a youth and later as a King, speaking with the authority of the One who formed the womb. The call of the prophet now moves into the heartbreak of a forsaken love.
