Chapter Analysis & Study Guide

The Inner Strength

The third chapter focuses on the unique commission of the apostle to reveal a secret that remained hidden through the ages of history. The setting is a prison in Rome, where Paul identifies himself as a prisoner for the sake of the non-Jewish nations. He explains the "Stewardship of the Mystery," which declares that the Gentiles are now fellow heirs and partakers of the promise. This starts with a defense of his ministry as a servant of the message that carries the unsearchable wealth of the Messiah.

The narrative follows a transition to deep intercession, where the writer bows his knees before the Father of every family in heaven and earth. The movement travels through the "Petition for Power," asking that the readers be strengthened in their inner nature through the Holy Spirit. Paul prays that the King would take up residence in their hearts through trust, allowing them to be rooted and grounded in affection. The text portrays the "Standard of the Infinite Capacity": as it describes the goal of being filled with all the fullness of the Almighty. It concludes with a shout of praise to the One who is able to do far more than all we ask or think.

Theological meaning is found in the "Theology of the Inhabited Heart." It reveals that the dimensions of the divine love—the width, length, height, and depth—surpass human knowledge, proving that the spiritual life is an experience of being known by the Infinite. This chapter is fundamental for understanding that the "Wisdom of God" is now being displayed to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places through the church. It highlights the "Boldness of Access": the truth that the believer can approach the throne with confidence because of the faithfulness of the Son. The Father is shown to be a God who "reveals secrets," ensuring that the riches of His glory are made available to all people through the work of the Spirit.

Jesus is the Mystery Revealed and the One in whom we find the riches of the Father. He is the Focus of the apostolic prayer and the Lord who dwells within the believer. As the apostle establishes the strength of the inner man, he turns to issue a call for unity and maturity within the body of faith (Ephesians 4:1).
