The Battle Line
The Valley of Elah was a key entry point into Judah, often contested by the Philistines. It became famous as the standoff point where the giant Goliath taunted the armies of Israel for forty days, paralyzing them with fear.
Shepherd vs. Giant
David, a young shepherd, was the only one unafraid. He recounted how God had delivered him from the paw of the lionand the paw of the bearwhile protecting his flock. "Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God ? " (1 Samuel 17:26).
The Battle is the Lord's
David entered the valley not with armor, but with a sling and five smooth stones. He declared to Goliath: "You come to me with a sword... but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts." His victory demonstrated that "the LORD saves not with sword and spear" (1 Samuel 17: 45 - 47). The valley today remains an agricultural site, but the brook where David chose his stones can still be visited.
