The Beautiful Village
Nain—meaning "beauty" or "pleasantness"—was a small village about four miles from Mount Tabor in Galilee. Set on elevated ground, it commanded breathtaking views of Mount Carmel, the Nazareth hills, and distant Mount Hermon. Despite its lovely name and setting, Nain was modest and unimportant—mentioned nowhere else in Scripture. Yet Jesus, great crowds following Him, chose to visit this obscure village. Divine appointments often occur in places the world overlooks.
A Funeral Interrupted
As Jesus approached Nain's gate, a funeral procession emerged. A widow was burying her only son—her sole support, her only family, her future. "When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, 'Don't cry.'" Then He did what no one expected: He touched the funeral bier. The procession stopped. "Young man, I say to you, get up!" The dead man sat up and began to talk. Jesus gave him back to his mother. Death itself was interrupted by the Author of life walking into a village called "beauty."
Fear and Glory
"They were all filled with awe and praised God. 'A great prophet has appeared among us,' they said. 'God has come to help his people.'" The villagers recognized something extraordinary—shades of Elijah raising the widow's son at Zarephath (1 Kings 17). News spread throughout Judea and beyond. In tiny Nain, far from Jerusalem's religious establishment, God demonstrated His compassion for a grieving widow and His power over the grave. The beautiful village became beautiful indeed.
Foretaste of Resurrection
The miracle at Nain was more than simply about physical resuscitation—the young man would eventually die again. It pointed forward to a greater resurrection. Nain demonstrates that Jesus feels the grief of the bereaved, approaches the bier of death, and speaks life into what was dead. "But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions." The widow's son received years of life; we receive eternity. Nain was a preview of coming attractions.
