Zebulun was Leah's sixth son and Jacob's tenth. His birth came during the ongoing competition between Leah and Rachel for their husband's affection.
When Zebulun was born, Leah declared, "God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honor, because I have borne him six sons." His name plays on multiple Hebrew words—zabal (dwell/honor), zebed (gift), and zabad (endow). Leah hoped that giving Jacob six sons would finally secure her the affection she craved.
Scripture doesn't record much about Zebulun personally. He was presumably among the brothers who sold Joseph into slavery, as the text mentions all the brothers except Benjamin participating. He later went to Egypt during the famine and eventually died there before the Exodus.
Jacob's deathbed blessing placed Zebulun "by the seashore," prophesying he would become "a haven for ships" with borders extending toward Sidon. This anticipated the tribe's eventual coastal location.
