Simon the Leper

Simon the Leper lived in Bethany, a village where Jesus had close friends. He hosted a dinner where one of Scripture's most beautiful acts of devotion occurred.
The designation "the Leper" has puzzled many. Under Mosaic law, lepers were isolated—they couldn't host dinners. Almost certainly, Simon had been healed. The nickname referenced his former condition, perhaps identifying him among several Simons in the area.
At the meal, a woman approached with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume. She broke the jar and poured it over Jesus' head. The fragrance filled the room. The disciples were indignant: "Why this waste? This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor."
Jesus defended her: "Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial."
The timing was significant—days before the crucifixion. Whether the woman understood the full meaning is unclear, but Jesus interpreted her act as prophetic preparation.
His promise followed: "Wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."
Theological Significance
Simon's healed leprosy connects to Jesus' ministry of restoration. The one who made lepers clean likely healed the host of this dinner.
The anointing act shows extravagant worship is appropriate. The disciples called it waste; Jesus called it beautiful. Sometimes what seems impractical to others is precisely what Jesus values.
The connection between this anointing and Jesus' burial shows how ordinary moments can carry extraordinary significance. She may not have understood everything, but her devotion was honored.
