Biblical Profile
Eleazar, the third son of Aaron, stands as a pillar of stability and faithfulness throughout the transition from the wilderness to the Promised Land. After his brothers Nadab and Abihu were consumed by God for offering 'unauthorized fire,' Eleazar became the de facto heir. He was given the daunting task of processing the copper censers after Korah’s rebellion and was entrusted with the oversight of the entire Tabernacle.
His most critical moment came on Mount Hor, where he ascended with Moses and his father Aaron. In a solemn ceremony, Moses stripped Aaron of the High Priestly garments and placed them on Eleazar, marking a peaceful and divine succession. For the rest of his long life, he was the spiritual counterpart to Joshua. Together, they led the conquest, oversaw the crossing of the Jordan, and distributed the land of Canaan to the tribes. He died and was buried at Gibeah, having successfully passed the priesthood to his son Phinehas.
