Barzillai the Gileadite is one of the most heartwarming figures in the Old Testament, representing the virtue of active loyalty and the wisdom of old age. A wealthy man from Rogelim in Gilead, he came to King David’s aid at Mahanaim when the king was fleeing from his son Absalom. Along with other leaders, he brought beds, basins, pottery, and and a massive amount of food to sustain the king and his weary followers.
When the rebellion was crushed and David was returning to crossing the Jordan to Jerusalem, he invited Barzillai to come and live with him at the palace. Barzillai, however, displayed a rare form of contentment. At eighty years old, he knew his physical senses were failing and he did not want to be a 'burden' to the king. He declined the honor of the court but requested that his son, Chimham, be taken instead. David’s last instructions to Solomon years later included a command to show kindness to Barzillai’s sons, proving that David never forgot the man who helped him when he had nothing.
