Abijah
Biblical Profile
Abijah (also called Abijam) was the son of Rehoboam and the second king of the southern Kingdom of Judah. His short three-year reign was marked by a massive military confrontation with Jeroboam I of the northern Kingdom of Israel. Facing an army twice the size of his own, Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim and delivered a powerful sermon, rebelling against Jeroboam's idolatry and calling on Judah to trust in God. Despite being ambushed, the men of Judah cried out to the Lord, the priests blew the trumpets, and God granted them a miraculous victory. Abijah captured several cities from Israel and his power grew significantly before his death.
Theological Significance
Abijah's story emphasizes that victory belongs to the Lord, regardless of military odds. His sermon at Mount Zemaraim is a classic defense of the Davidic covenant and the legitimate priesthood in Jerusalem versus the golden calves of the North. However, the chronicler notes that although God gave him victory, Abijah's heart was not fully devoted to the Lord as his ancestor David's had been (1 Kings 15:3). His life stands a complex reminder that God may use and deliver a leader for the sake of His covenant promises even when that leader is personally flawed.
