Genesis 9:27 Commentary

"May God extend the territory of Japheth; may Japheth dwell in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be the slave of Japheth." The blessing of Japheth closes Noah's prophetic speech. The enlargement promised, the Hebrew word for "extend" (yaft) plays on Japheth's name, a naming pun built into the blessing itself, anticipates the vast geographical spread of Japheth's descendants across the table of nations in Genesis 10. The blessing is not private prosperity but territorial expansion: Japheth's lines will fill the northwest reaches of the ancient world.

The phrase "may Japheth dwell in the tents of Shem" is the most disputed clause in the blessing. It can mean that Japheth's peoples will share in the spiritual heritage of Shem, entering the covenant household's dwelling place and the worship that happens within it.
