Genesis 5:12 Commentary

When Kenan was 70 years old, he became the father of Mahalalel. The genealogy continues its measured rhythm, but this name carries a remarkable weight: Mahalalel means "praise of God" or "God is praised." In a lineage where names carry prophetic or descriptive meaning, the arrival of a child named for divine praise suggests that even in the quiet, anonymous middle of the generations, worship was the defining characteristic of this family.

Kenan received the faith from Enosh, who had received it from Seth, who had been appointed by God as a replacement for the murdered Abel. The chain was holding. Kenan is proof that faithfulness does not always produce spectacular biographies; sometimes it produces children whose very names declare that the family has not forgotten who God is. That is itself a form of spiritual achievement.

Not every generation is called to pioneer something new. Some are called to hold the ground the previous generation claimed and to raise children in that same space. Kenan's greatest documented act was fathering a son whose name was an act of worship. That is not a small thing.
