What Does Genesis 47:6 Mean?
Verse-by-verse commentary and theological analysis
Genesis 47:6 Commentary
"Let them dwell in the land of Goshen, and if you know any able men among them, put them in charge of my livestock." Pharaoh specifies Goshen as the settlement location: confirming Joseph's arrangement: and also offers employment: qualified men among Joseph's brothers can oversee Pharaoh's own livestock. This is a remarkable offer: Pharaoh is inviting the foreign shepherds (who are "an abomination to the Egyptians" culturally) to manage his personal royal herds. The offer transcends the cultural prejudice that would typically exclude shepherds from honorable Egyptian employment, extended specifically because the family members' occupation (shepherds) is exactly what the position requires.
The livestock management offer is practical: Pharaoh has extensive royal herds that require skilled shepherds. Joseph's brothers are experienced herdsmen from multigenerational families of the trade. The employment opportunity is a convergence of need (Pharaoh's herds need management) and supply (experienced shepherd-brothers available). Joseph's management of the family's presentation has produced not just settlement rights but honorable employment for qualified members of the group.
"If you know any able men among them": Pharaoh defers to Joseph's knowledge of which brothers are most capable for livestock management. He is not ordering Joseph to draft all the brothers but inviting Joseph to identify the most competent for the specific royal employment. The delegation of the selection to Joseph is consistent with the authority Pharaoh extended to Joseph throughout Genesis 41: Joseph's judgment is trusted; he knows his brothers' capabilities; he can identify the ones suited for royal service. The family's settlement in Goshen is thus not just residential but potentially includes meaningful employment in Pharaoh's service.
