What Does Genesis 46:34 Mean?
Verse-by-verse commentary and theological analysis
Genesis 46:34 Commentary
"You shall say, 'Your servants have been keepers of livestock from our youth even until now, both we and our fathers,' in order that you may dwell in the land of Goshen, for every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians." The verse repeats verse 33's instruction and rationale, with minor variation: effectively the second half of Joseph's coaching speech to the brothers before the Pharaoh audience. The repetition reveals the critical importance Joseph places on the correct answer to the occupation question: the family's settlement in Goshen depends on Pharaoh receiving the shepherd-occupation information in a way that leads naturally to the Goshen decision.
The double emphasis on "every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians" (stated both in the contextual explanation and in the coaching instruction) is Joseph making sure his family understands the social dynamic they are navigating. They are about to appear before Pharaoh as a family of Canaanite shepherds: exactly the kind of foreigners that Egyptian cultural sensibility found low-status. Joseph is managing the encounter not to hide their identity but to route the conversation in the direction that produces Goshen as the outcome.
The chapter ends with Joseph's coaching: not with the Pharaoh audience itself (that comes in Genesis 47). The cliffhanger of the chapter is the family ready to appear before Pharaoh with Joseph's specific instructions about what to say, the entire seventy-person household having arrived in Goshen, and Jacob having spoken his "now let me die" of completion. The chapter that began with Jacob's Beersheba sacrifice seeking divine confirmation ends with Joseph's court management ensuring the family's appropriate settlement. God's promise (I will make you a great nation there) and Joseph's administrative intelligence (say this to Pharaoh) converge in the final verse of the chapter.
