What Does Genesis 46:25 Mean?

These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and these she bore to Jacob: seven persons in all. Bilhah's total: seven persons. Like Zilpah's verse (v.18), Bilhah is identified in relation to Laban: "whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter." Both handmaids are traced to the same origin (Laban's household), clarifying that they were not Jacob's independent household's servants but the handmaids that Laban assigned to his daughters as part of the marriage arrangements. The census treats the handmaids' sons as full members of the family by accounting them in the total.

Seven for Bilhah's line (Dan and Naphtali and five descendants) is the smallest total of the four matrilineal groups. Leah 33, Zilpah 16, Rachel 14, Bilhah 7: together these sum to 70, the total given in verse 27. The completeness of the count and the seventy total is the genealogy's organizational achievement: every person in the family migration is accounted for, organized by matrilineal group, with totals for each group and a grand total at the end. The census is a complete document of the migration.

The four matrilineal totals: 33 + 16 + 14 + 7 = 70: represent the full family of Israel descending to Egypt. The number seventy has significance across biblical literature as a complete or representative number (seventy nations in Genesis 10, seventy elders in Exodus 24:1, seventy of Jacob's household in Deuteronomy 10:22). The specific number 70 for the Egypt migration becomes a theological datum: a small, countable family of seventy goes down; a nation emerges from that original seventy's descendants, fulfilling the promise that God would make Jacob "a great nation" in Egypt (Genesis 46:3).
