Genesis 45:21 Commentary

The sons of Israel did so: and Joseph gave them wagons, according to the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provisions for the journey. The execution is swift and comprehensive: Joseph provides the wagons (Pharaoh's commanded provision) and provisions for the journey (food for the travel from Egypt to Canaan). The brothers are not sent away with instructions and no resources; they are equipped for the specific journey they need to make. Wagons for transport, provisions for the road: Joseph thinks of the practical needs before the brothers can ask.

"According to the commandment of Pharaoh": the wagons are not from Joseph's personal resources but from the Egyptian state's resources, per Pharaoh's explicit authorization. The prime minister is executing the king's commandment: the appropriate chain of authority for an official action of this magnitude. Joseph has his father's family as his personal motivation; Pharaoh's commandment is the official authorization; the execution of the commandment is Joseph's action. Personal care and official authority converge in the provision of wagons.

"Gave them provisions for the journey": the food for the trip from Egypt to Canaan is the same hospitality gesture as the feast of Genesis 43 and the generous grain loads of Genesis 44:1. Joseph consistently gives his brothers more than they came for: grain for the household, returned silver, feast, Simeon released, Benjamin safe, now wagons and journey food. Every transaction between Joseph and his brothers has involved Joseph giving more than the official circumstances required. The pattern of generosity under the official persona is now revealed as the brother's love expressed through the prime minister's resources.
